Back in the studio

Not pictured: sleeping bag beneath table. Not yet accuired: mini-fridge.

One of the great things about being a senior at MICA is the senior studios we get. I practically live in mine during the school-year, and I’m really going to miss it after I’ve graduated. This is just one of three tables I have in my little cubicle, and I sit on a nicely padded computer chair as well. Since I don’t use the other big table much, Heather, who is technically a junior, uses it.

Today I had lifestyles, which is a half fashion illustration/half make things sexy class. Besides working on our main project (which I am super excited about) we did some in class observational drawings of photos Daniel Krall brought in. Here are a few of mine.

Everyone who stops on the street to get their picture taken stands pigeon toed to look cute. I have an inflammation of the muscles holding my hip joint in its socket due to childhood illness, so I always look cute.

gouache and copic marker. When the pain of my bursitis becomes intolerable, my hip will snap and I can fall over. Doing this on a crowded sidewalk on my way to class is less cute. Agonizing is the word that comes to mind.

Lifestyles: Melora + Valmont

First assignment of the semester, for my lifestyles and fashion illustration class. We are to make paper  dolls, and once a week design an article of clothing for them based off an existing design from a designer/couture label. I am super excited as I have been wanting to do a project like this for years. We have to do three, so I’m doing two girls and a boy. (very much a work in progress)

trad-media nametags and outfits soon.

Art: mine and yours

Last friday was the first meeting of the Gentlemen’s Film Society, a group I started with my good friends Fala and Heather. We meet at Fala’s appartment and draw/paint, and watch period films (or whatever we happen to have on hand). We also consume enormous quantities of tea, and Fala cooks his vegan dinners for us and I think I will try to bring along some baked goods. Above are two views of Fala’s apartment—its small but charming in every way. Next on the list of movies to watch are Don Juan deMarco and Valmont.

Class has started, and I am so ready to get back to working full time on my assignments. I thought this would be a good opportunity to share with you some inspirations that have been fuelling my work—maybe you will see something you like.

Up first is Pavel Pepperstien’s monuments of the future:

Do check out the other works in the series.

Over the last year, Sarah Ferrick has really been influential on my process:

Also, I’ve found some erotic Shunga prints from the turn of the century to contain remarkable use of color and composition (just look at that blue!) :

I must flee now to my history of animation class. Expect lots more work!

2010 Sketchbook

I was inspired by Yelena’s beautiful handmade sketchbook (Becca also), and since I’ve been working on the last pages of four or five cheap storebought ones for months, I decided to try for myself.

I sewed it on my Espire sewing machine, which I love so much i could marry it. It was my mom’s in college during the 70’s, and it has a digital read out and great design <3

I love bright red calico. When I was a child, living in the french country-side, this fabric was very popular for making children’s things. I’m pretty sure I had some clothing made from it, and I had a soft fabric-book with vinyl shapes, animals, and numbers inside that had this print on the outside. As an adult, I love bright red and the sight of red calico makes me nostalgic.

This only took me two and a half hours to make, and I’m sure I could do it faster. If the blue version I’m making now is a success, I might sell these in my etsy shop. Thanks for the idea, Yelena!
